Start your engines: The County Council approved an agreement this week with the Washington Quarter Midget Association to let the group build a new racetrack at the Evergreen State Fairgrounds in Monroe.

The track would be built on the west parking lot overflow area.

The association has been using a track at Paine Field for 33 years, and county officials have been working for more than a year on finding a new home for the midget racers.

                                                                   NASCAR TRACK
Area's young racers deserve role models.

We have to agree with Jamie Kessler of Snohomish, who wrote in support of a proposed NASCAR track in Snohomish County ("Track supporters need to be heard," Feb. 19). Kessler was correct that not everyone is into football, basketball, baseball, etc. Some of us love NASCAR and would welcome a track in Snohomish County.

There is a little-known group of kids ages 5-16 that race quarter-midgets in several locations throughout Washington, including Everett. These kids that race quarter-midgets aspire to be NASCAR drivers. It would be so beneficial to these kids to be able to compete in NASCAR right in their own backyards instead of having to move back East to even be able to get their feet in the door.

We have the major leagues to encourage the kids to go into baseball, football and hockey. We need a NASCAR track in Snohomish County to support these kids that want to follow in Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s footsteps.
